As part of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend festival, this project introduced a virtual extension of the live event — allowing users to attend the Radio 1 Dance Stage in real time through an interactive, web-based 3D environment. Designed to complement the physical festival, the virtual space offered fans a new way to engage with live performances, accessible from anywhere.
With just one month of development time, the project was built under tight constraints, including strict performance requirements to ensure compatibility with older mobile devices. Developed for three.js, the experience needed to load instantly in-browser while maintaining visual clarity and festival energy. The environment was designed to feel like a distinct, enclosed section of a real-world festival — creating a sense of presence and atmosphere within a technically lean framework. Collaboration with the BBC involved fast iteration, brand alignment, and adapting to live broadcast requirements on a tight schedule.
Despite some network-related issues at the physical festival site on day one, the virtual event was a success. Audience feedback highlighted the immersive feel and effective visual design of the venue. The project proved valuable as a test case for how large-scale physical festivals can extend their reach into virtual spaces, offering both accessibility and new creative opportunities for fan engagement.
